“An examination of her body after death”

By: Glen Colquhoun

“An examination of her body after death” is a poem about losing a loved one. In the poem, Glen Colquhoun is examining her body after she has died, in a morgue. Colquhoun uses two main ideas throughout the poem to get his point across. The first is by denying her death; he uses negative statements to get this point across. Another main idea that he uses is remembering his friend; Colquhoun uses metaphors to get this point across. By saying what she looks like now and what she used to look like when she was alive.

One of the main ideas that Colquhoun uses is denying his friends death. Each line in the poem is referring to an object that is completely unlike her. He says “You are not her shoulders” to show that he cannot accept that it is her lying on the slab in front of him. He uses repeated negative statements to get this point across. The language feature that he uses to get this point across is negative statements. Colquhoun uses negative statements to show that he cannot accept his friends’ death. By using the repeated statement of “You are not her...” it shows that he is unwilling to live with the fact that it is her. These statements of denial are used throughout the poem, at the beginning of each stanza.

Another main idea portrayed in the poem is remembering his friend. He refers to her voice as “The sound of birds” which tells us that she had a very beautiful voice. It also shows that he remembers her being a very chirpy person which is not the case anymore. Colquhoun uses metaphors to compare what she was like when she alive to what she is now. He uses “The sound of birds has gone away” to show that her voice is no longer recognisable. She is no longer how she used to be, and is no longer perky. He uses metaphors to describe each part of her body, what it used to be like and what it is now she has passed away.

So in conclusion, one of the main ideas that Colquhoun portrays in the poem is denying his friends’ death; and he uses repeated negative statements to get this point across. The other main idea depicted in the poem is remembering his friend; Colquhoun uses metaphors to show what she was like before and after death. I found that the language features were used well to depict the images portrayed in the story and I liked the poem because it is an everyday reality for many people.
