CUT

By Sylvia Plath

“Cut” is a very strongly worded poem about Sylvia Plath slicing the top off her thumb while chopping onions. Plath uses many techniques to emphasize the pain, blood and remains of her thumb. Most prominently used are metaphors and similes.

The most common technique that Plath uses is metaphors. She compares the blood to “carpet rolls” and “your turkey wattle” which clearly shows the image of fast flowing blood. Another technique that is used in the poem is similes. She describes the top of her thumb like “a flap like a hat”. Plath uses these techniques during the poem to change the mood from surprised and struck by adrenaline to dark and self hate.

Plath uses many different moods during the poem. They are changing all the time, becoming worse and worse. Towards the beginning of the poem, she refers the mistake to a celebration by saying “clutching my bottle of pink fizz”. She uses this metaphor to compare the blood to a bottle of pink champagne. As the poem progresses, the moods gets darker. “Homunculus, I am ill. I have taken a pill to kill the thin papery feeling” shows that she has now realised what has happened and is starting to feel ill. The mood then progresses into self hate by calling herself a “dirty girl”. She has now realised what has happened and hates herself for it. She is obviously not a normal person.

So in conclusion, “Cut” is a poem about self hate, pain and self frustration. Sylvia Plath uses many different techniques to get the image of a bloody stump of a thumb across. She mostly uses metaphors. There is no overall mood in the poem; it is changing all the time. As the poem progresses, the mood gets darker. Although I did find the techniques were used well, I didn’t like the poem because it made Sylvia Plath come across as a crazy woman.

Slumdog millionaire

In the film Slumdog Millionaire the main idea is the conflict between Prem Kumar (the show host) and Jamal Malik. This conflict helps me to understand Jamal’s love for Latika. Prem Kumar is a very outgoing and confident character, who is making jokes at Jamal’s misfortune in life. Jamal does not react to these statements and simply shrugs them off. This conflict goes on throughout the entire film.

The main conflict in Slumdog Millionaire was the one between Prem and Jamal. The conflict is very one sided towards Prem dishing out all the insults and Jamal taking it all without reaction. Prem thinks he is far superior to Jamal and uses condescending gestures and remarks to prove this. For example, Jamal is called a “chaiwallah” and an “assistant phone basher” referring to his job as a person who gets tea for people in a call centre. The conflict between Prem and Jamal is progressed further as the film progresses and the hate builds between the two of them. Prem does not want Jamal to get any of the questions right so he is able to humiliate him in front of the audience. He wants to retain his title as the only millionaire from the show.

The other main idea in the film is that love conquers all. The conflict also helps me to understand Jamal’s love for Latika. Jamal is not a contestant on Who Wans to be a Millionaire for the money but instead for his love for Latika. We know this when he say “It’s not about the money”. We understand later in the film that he is trying to find Latika when he says to her “I knew you’d be watching”. The constant flashbacks to his past that helped us understand how he had made it through the questions regularly included Latika. This shows that it was a childhood love and that he must have been waiting for her for a long time. The flashbacks help me to understand Jamal’s love for Latika because they show how much he cared about her and looked after her. They also showed that he desperately wanted to be with her. Prem does not believe Jamal when he says he was not on the show for the money and mocks him for it. The main idea becomes true when he is finally re united with Latika and they are able to live their lives without hassle.

In the film Slumdog Millionaire the main ideas are the conflict between Jamal and Prem and also that love conquers all. The conflict between Prem and Jamal progresses throughout the film with Prem constantly insulting and making rude remarks about Jamal. In the end of the film, Jamal gets payback when he correctly answers the 20 million rupee question. The main idea that love conquers all also turned out to be true when Jamal and Latika were re united and able to live their lives without worrying about safety or money.
